Granite
Quarried, unique slab to slab, and unbothered by a hot pan set down without thinking. It has been the workhorse of city kitchens for decades for good reason. Reseal it once a year and it will outlast the cabinets.
Quartzite
Natural stone with marble's look and more hardness than granite. The answer for a white kitchen with veining where etching and scratching are real concerns.
Calacatta Laza
People mix it up with Carrara. Carrara is grayer with fine, feathery veins. Calacatta is whiter with fewer veins that hit harder. That contrast is why it photographs so well, and it is also why the price sits well above most other marbles.
White Quartz
Engineered, so the slab matches the sample. Nonporous and sealing free, which suits a kitchen that gets used every night. Consistency across pieces makes it the safe call when an island and a perimeter run have to read as one material.

The bungalow belt on the Southwest and Northwest Sides is full of 1920s kitchens with compact footprints, original cabinet depths, and doorways that were never sized for a slab. Those installs come down to careful measurement and honest planning about where a seam has to go.
Two flats and three flats bring stairs into the equation. A full slab weighs several hundred pounds, and carrying it up two flights with a turn at the landing is a decision made before fabrication, not during. We measure the stairwell when we measure the kitchen.
Downtown and North Side condos come with a different set of constraints: freight elevator windows, certificates of insurance, protected corridors, and building hours that limit when work can happen. We handle that paperwork ahead of time. Countertop Questions From Chicago Homeowners
How much do kitchen countertops cost in Chicago?
Cost depends on the stone, the square footage, the edge profile, and how much cutout work the job needs. Granite and quartz generally sit in the same range as each other, with quartzite and marble above them. We give a written estimate after measuring, with material and labor broken out so you can see what is driving the number.
Can you get a slab up the stairs in a walk-up or three flat?
Usually, and when we cannot, we plan for it. We measure the stairwell, the landings, and the doorways during the template visit, not on installation day. If a full piece will not make the turn at a landing, we decide where the seam falls in advance and put it where it is least visible rather than improvising on site.
Do you handle condo and high rise building requirements?
Yes. We provide certificates of insurance naming your building and management company, reserve the freight elevator, pad the corridors, and work within the building's permitted hours. Send us your management contact and we deal with the paperwork directly rather than making you chase it.
My kitchen is in an old bungalow. Will that be a problem?
Not a problem, but it does change the approach. Bungalow kitchens are compact, cabinet depths are often non-standard, and after a century the walls are rarely square. We template the room as it actually stands instead of working from measurements that assume everything is straight. We also check the interior doorway, since a slab can get into the house easily and then not get into the kitchen.
Where will your truck park on my street?
We ask about parking during the template visit and arrange a permit in advance where one is needed. Permit zones, street cleaning days, and bike lanes all limit the options on a lot of city blocks. If your street has restrictions, tell us early so it is sorted before installation morning rather than at seven that day.
How long does the whole process take?
Templating takes about an hour and happens once your cabinets are set and level. Fabrication typically runs one to two weeks depending on the material and shop schedule. Installation on a standard kitchen is a single day, including removal of the old tops.
Do I have to come out to the showroom?
No, we can bring samples to you. That said, for granite, quartzite, and marble we do recommend seeing the full slab, since veining varies enough that a small sample does not represent the piece going in your kitchen. Our slab yard is at 4711 135th St in Crestwood and someone will walk it with you.
Can I keep my existing sink?
Often, if the sink is in good condition and the new cutout matches it. We will tell you at the measurement whether reusing it makes sense or whether a new sink is the better move. Either way we need the exact model before fabrication, because an undermount cutout is built to that specific sink.
Can you replace the countertops without replacing my cabinets?
Yes, and it is a large share of what we do in the city. If the cabinets are solid and level, new tops alone change the room substantially at a fraction of a full remodel. We do check the cabinets and the floor at the template, since stone is heavy and needs a sound base under it.
