Quick answer: Granite runs about $45–$90 per square foot installed, which usually makes it the best-value natural stone for an Oak Lawn kitchen — often a few hundred dollars less than quartz for the same layout. It’s harder to beat for heat tolerance, so it suits households that cook constantly. The trade-off is that some granites benefit from sealing once or twice a year, and no two slabs are identical, which is exactly why you should see the full slab before it’s cut. What Granite Costs in an Oak Lawn Kitchen
| Kitchen | Typical sq ft | Granite, installed | Quartz, for comparison |
|---|---|---|---|
| Galley, single run | 20–30 | $1,200–$2,400 | $1,500–$2,800 |
| Standard L-shape | 30–40 | $1,800–$3,400 | $2,200–$4,000 |
| U-shape or small island | 40–55 | $2,500–$4,800 | $3,000–$5,500 |
| Newer build, large island | 55–80 | $3,800–$7,200 | $4,500–$8,500 |
| Bathroom vanity | 8–15 | $500–$1,300 | $600–$1,500 |
Granite generally comes in below quartz for the same kitchen, and the gap widens on entry and mid-tier stones. Premium and exotic granites move the other way. Our quoted price covers material, templating, fabrication, edge, cutouts, delivery, installation, tear-out and disposal — compare it against other estimates using our quote checklist.
Where Granite Beats Quartz
| Granite | Quartz | |
|---|---|---|
| Heat | Excellent. A hot pan won’t damage it the way it can quartz | Needs a trivet, always |
| Price | Often lower for comparable kitchens | Slightly higher on average |
| Uniqueness | No two slabs identical — your kitchen is one of one | Consistent and repeatable |
| UV stability | Fine in a sunny kitchen or outdoors | Can be affected by prolonged direct sun |
| Sealing | Some stones, once or twice a year | Never |
| Matching later | Hard to match exactly | Easy to repeat |
The honest recommendation: if you cook heavily, want natural stone, and value price, granite is the better buy. If you want zero maintenance and consistent color across kitchen and bathrooms, choose quartz. Both are in the showroom, so compare them in one visit. See quartz vs granite vs quartzite.
The Sealing Question, Answered Straight
“Granite needs constant sealing” is the most repeated myth in this business. The truth: it depends on the stone. Granite density varies enormously. Some dark, dense granites practically never need sealer. Some lighter, more porous stones benefit from it once or twice a year.
The test takes fifteen minutes: drip water on the surface and wait. If the stone darkens where the water sat, it’s ready for sealer. If it beads and the stone stays the same color, you’re fine.
Sealing itself is a wipe-on, wipe-off job that takes about twenty minutes for a whole kitchen. We tell you at the measurement whether the specific slab you’ve chosen is one that wants regular sealing, so you know before you buy rather than after. Care detail in our countertop care guide.
Why You Must See the Full Slab
This matters more with granite than with any other material. A four-inch sample shows a fragment of a pattern that varies across eight feet. Full slabs carry:
- Directional movement that has to be laid out deliberately
- Mineral concentrations and color transitions the sample never shows
- Variation between two slabs sold under the same name
- Features unique to your slab — which is the appeal, once you’ve seen them
We walk the slab with you and mark the layout before cutting: which section becomes the island, which becomes the perimeter, and how the movement flows between them. That’s a fabricator decision, and it’s why we do it in house rather than sending your kitchen to someone else’s saw. See slab selection and templating.
Granite in Oak Lawn Homes
Oak Lawn’s post-war ranches, Georgians and split-levels usually have compact kitchens of 30 to 45 square feet, which affects the granite choice in two practical ways:
- Busy, high-movement granite gets cut up. In a galley or L-shaped kitchen, most of the slab becomes narrow perimeter runs, and a dramatic pattern fragments. Moderate movement usually reads better here
- One slab often covers the kitchen. A granite slab runs roughly 110″–120″ by 65″–75″, so most Oak Lawn kitchens fit within one — which keeps both cost and seam count down
And a local note on cabinets: many Oak Lawn kitchens keep original or 1990s cabinetry and change only the counters. Granite is heavy, so we check that the boxes are sound and level at the measurement. Decades of settling leave cabinets off-level far more often than people expect.
Colors That Work Here
| If your cabinets are… | Granite direction |
|---|---|
| Oak or honey-toned wood | Warm browns, golds, tans and creams with moderate movement |
| Painted white | Black, charcoal or high-contrast granite for a classic look; soft gray-whites for a quieter one |
| Painted gray | Gray and silver-toned granite, or black for contrast |
| Maple or light wood | Warm beiges and light granites with fine speckle |
| Dark cabinets | Light granite for contrast; a bright room is needed for dark-on-dark |
Speckled and mid-tone granites are the most forgiving between cleanings, which matters in a kitchen that works hard. Solid black granite looks striking and shows every fingerprint and water spot.
Seams and Slab Counts
Most Oak Lawn galley and L-shaped kitchens need no seam or one, typically at the sink or an inside corner. With granite there’s a second consideration: since no two slabs match, a kitchen needing two slabs should have both pulled from the same lot and viewed together. We handle that at selection. More in how seams work.

Oak Lawn Granite FAQs
How much does granite cost in Oak Lawn?
About $45 to $90 per square foot installed. Most Oak Lawn kitchens run 30 to 45 square feet, landing between $1,800 and $3,400.
Is granite cheaper than quartz?
Usually yes, for comparable kitchens, and the gap is widest on entry and mid-tier stones. Premium and exotic granites can cost more than quartz.
Does granite need sealing?
It depends on the stone. Drip water on it and wait fifteen minutes — if the stone darkens, it wants sealer. Some granites need it once or twice a year, some rarely.
Can you put hot pans on granite?
Granite handles heat far better than quartz. A trivet is still good practice, but a hot pan won’t damage it the way it can damage quartz resin.
Does granite stain?
Rarely when sealed appropriately. Wipe oil, wine and acidic spills promptly and you’ll have no issues.
Why do I need to see the full slab?
Because no two granite slabs are identical. A small sample can’t show movement, mineral concentration or color transitions across eight feet.
Will my Oak Lawn kitchen need one slab or two?
Most galley and L-shaped kitchens here fit within one. If two are needed, we pull both from the same lot and view them together.
Can granite go on my existing cabinets?
Usually, if they’re structurally sound. Granite is heavy, so we check the boxes and their level at the measurement.
Which granite colors suit oak cabinets?
Warm browns, golds, tans and creams with moderate movement.
Do you remove the old countertops?
Yes. Tear-out and disposal are included in our written price.
How long does installation take?
About a week of fabrication after templating, and most kitchens install in a single day.
Do you install granite in Evergreen Park and Chicago Ridge?
Yes, along with Burbank, Hometown, Alsip, Worth, Palos Heights, Palos Hills, Hickory Hills, Oak Forest and the Chicago neighborhoods nearby.
